Let me tell you why it’s important to get enough rest before you travel.
Do you find that when you travel you feel super tired when you get to your destination? Especially if you’re the type (this is me) who can’t seem to sleep soundly the night before you’re scheduled to fly out. Welcome to the story of my life. Haha… Let me share with you why it’s important to get enough sleep before you travel to a new place.
We landed on Thursday morning after being in the air all night for a little under 7 hours. As I stepped off the plane, the feeling of excitement hit me that I’m finally in London, England! Which is so exciting, I really enjoy going to new places. After I allow myself to take in all the new sights and sound, I can feel my entire body tightening up and begging me to allow it to sleep. I contemplate sitting down on the first bench I see after grabbing our bags, but I decide against it to get to the hotel faster. My body needs a minimum of 6 hours of sleep to function properly. The trouble is, I can’t seem to sleep before I travel. I usually wait until the wee hours of the morning to start packing my bags, which I know is a super bad habit. I think they call it procrastination…lol, but I think I also use it as a great excuse to justify why I don’t sleep before I travel.
Why am I telling you all of this? Because we tend to love to resist doing what we know will make us feel good and will be good for us in the long run. You see, I resisted the urge to listen to my body’s plea to sleep and ended up feeling like crap the first day of my vacation. I inserted a monkey wrench in my ability to jump right into my trip without feeling tired and drained. If I had listened and taken my body’s wishes seriously I would have gained an extra day of sightseeing instead of sleeping almost a full day away. Yup! Lessons well learned.
Here’s why resisting things that are good for us is never a good idea. Let’s use the example of sleep. When we get a good night’s sleep, we are allowing the brain the freedom to take in and retain new information. At the same time, with proper sleep, our brains will have the ability to dig into its memory bank and pull out the stored information easier, to help us function in our world. This also helps the brain to have greater memory function. It’s suggested that while we’re asleep, the brain is strengthening our neural pathways and connections to form lasting and strong memories. Cool, right? So when I resisted the urge to sleep. I was preventing my brain from having the time it needed to work all its profound magic so that I can function optimal in the world. I was in essence, robbing my own self of the healing and reproductive function of my brain by simply resisting sleep.
Here are a few thing we can do to beat the bug of resistance.
When we feel any form of resistance towards a thing or a situation – step back and ask yourself these questions:
- What am I afraid of in this situation?
- Can the thing I am afraid of hurt me in any way?
- What will happen once I stop resisting?
Affirmations:
“I am guided by an infinite source who has my back at all times”
“I allow my body, mind and soul to relax into a restful state so that I can put my best foot forward.”
“I am more than I appear to be, fear has no power over me because all the world’s strength and power rests within me.”
Once we recognize that we are resisting something that may come up in our lives, it then becomes our responsibility to work really hard to figure out why we are doing this to ourselves. This can help us figure out why we’re not getting the results we really want to get. We must seek to find the best solution that will give us the right amount of insight to bring us back into balance. For me, not listening to my body when it was telling me to get some sleep led me to experience some form of suffering that could have been avoided if I only chose not to resist.
In the name of health and happiness let’s stop resisting stuff that will ultimately helps us to be (awe)some!
